I started working on this photo a couple days ago and got sidetracked, and quite handily, had some time to finish it today for my monochrome post. This was shot as a long exposure with an infrared filter, from the deck of Lion Sands Tinga Lodge (oh, how I wish I was there right now!)
I’m really hoping I can find some opportunities between work and school work to get out and play around with the infrared filter this summer, as it is definitely a technique I enjoy th look of, and would like to get some more skills in.

I’ve only had a couple of sightings of grey hornbills, and they have all been when the birds have been high in the treetops, usually at some distance, making capturing a decent image a bit of a challenge. The last trip I took probably had the best opportunity yet, though I still hope I will get to see this bird closer up, and in more detail, in the future. So we can add the grey hornbill to the always expanding list of things I want to see when I return to southern Africa sometime in the (hopefully) not too distant future.

I’d planned to edit and post these two weeks ago, but life got in the way. First, I was distracted by some ravens in the yard, and last week, I was caught up with studying for finals and didn’t manage to sneak in any time for photo editing. I’m enjoying a very brief break from studies and to be honest, not quite sure what to do with all this free time on my hands!
This week will feature some hornbill images, and hopefully I can carry on with local birds next week, as there are lots of new faces in the area now that it is warming up.

Even though it is the start of spring, it is still fairly colourless around my house, and still some sizeable snowbanks that are stubborn to fully melt. The last few days I have felt desperate for a bit of colour, so I tried to find a little in the images I still have left to edit.
I worry a bit that I will run out of images before I have the opportunity to travel or find something of interest locally to photograph, but I will cross that bridge if I get to it. Given how little time I can dedicate to photograph currently, it probably won’t be a problem any time soon.

2021-03-29: Monochrome Monday
I almost missed my Monday post, but remembered in the knick of time that I hadn’t put anything up yet today. I edited this one yesterday, and it was an interesting sighting that ended up involving three different leopards, while staying at Lion Sands.
This sighting was at dusk and lit with a spotlight with a red filter. Converting it to black and white was a great option to remove the strange colour casts, but I’ll be honest, I still find it a little flat looking. But, it was pretty flat with only a bit of light left in the sky, and the sighting in a fairly heavily treed area.
Regardless if the photo turned out great, it brings back memories and I find myself right back there in the vehicle, sitting behind our ranger Albert, who was getting rather frustrated by the confusing tracks all of the place, which made far more sense when we came to realize they were made by three different cats.
