2020-11-09: Monochrome Monday

Such a majestic creature!!! Words really can’t describe how it feels to be close to a big lion like this, or to have them walk by the vehicle so close you could reach out and touch their mane (but you don’t of course, because that would be amazingly foolish!)

Wishing everyone a fantastic week!

This image was shot with an infrared filter as a long exposure while staying at Lion Sands Tinga Lodge in South Africa last year. I hadn’t experimented with the filter too much before that, and it was a fun project to do during the middle of the day. I personally love how the fluffy clouds pop against the inky sky.

Part of an enormous herd of elephants seen in the Maasai Mara. We basically just parked the vehicle in a clearing surrounded by fever trees and watched group after group meander by, grazing, finding great scratching post trees and visiting amongst other family groups.

Happiness amongst the elephants 🙂

Elephants are such a wonderful subject for monochrome images. I know I have shared dozens before, but what’s three more?

Wishing you a wonderful week ahead.

This bull spent each afternoon around our camp, browsing among the tents and enjoying the waterhole.
A youngster in Amboseli marsh, on the move to catch up to the rest of the herd.
A small family group, part of a larger herd of around 30 individuals, seen at Amboseli National Park.

I didn’t find it easy to see Chimanzees in Kibale Forest, or to photograph them. The dark forest and bright skylight mid morning made for some challenging contrast to overcome, but it was absolutely worth it.

Most of the images that I took weren’t great, but I did find a few that I hadn’t previously edited, and a monochrome treatment seemed a perfect solution to highlight these amazing animals in the best way that I can.

I felt a bit guilty sharing previously posted photos yesterday, so I edited a few more than usual for my monochrome Monday post today. These bring back such amazing memories for me. Baby gorillas are just the cutest.

Moving around the easy way!
Makes me think of the children’s rhyme “This little piggy went to market…”
One of my favourite images that I have taken so far. Such a beautiful moment to witness.
These youngster were all really precocious and some of the Moms just looked exhausted.

Continuing on with East Africa images; this is a yellow baboon that I spotted on the side of road while driving between Queen Elizabeth National Park and Mweya Lodge near Kyambura Gorge. There were a few other baboons nearby, all foraging in the long grasses, but this one really caught my eye with the posture and turn of the head.

Another month starts tomorrow, let’s all make it a great one.

By this time of the day, this is pretty much how I am feeling. I think it’s time for a bit of a lazy evening.

A mother leopard catches a few zzz’s while her was safely tucked away in the bushes behind her. Viewed while staying at Chitwa Chitwa lodge.

Wishing everyone a wonderful week.
