2017-06-01: WPC Wanderlust

I’ve only recently returned from a trip to southern Africa, and over the past month, I’ve seen so much it is almost tough to know where to begin. There were blooming deserts and blowing sandstorms.

There were watery playgrounds for the large and the small.

There were close encounters with wildlife, and close encounters with humans while tracking wildlife.

This and so much in between. So many stories, so many sightings, so many wonderful people and so many memories that will make my heart happy every time I think of them, for years to come.

My wanderlust keeps pulling me back to Africa, and I am hopeful that it won’t be long before I can return again.

2017-05-14: Masai Mara

The wildlife in the Masai Mara was just as amazing as it looks in all the nature programs that I watch. Here is a selection of images from my time there.

DSC_9893-Edit — The chaos of a river crossing.

migration — Waiting somewhat patiently for the chance to move up the steep slope.

migration-2 — As more an more animals moved up the banks, the ones that had slipped and fallen were stepped on.

migration-3 — A sad group of wildebeest too weak or injured to get up the banks. We left shortly after this, so I don;t know if any of them found the strength to continue, or if they ended up as food for the crocs.

DSC_9766-Edit — Thankfully this one made it back out alive. Of the five I saw try, only two made it out.

DSC_9645-Edit — A group of mongoose that took over a termite mound.

DSC_9612-Edit — A rare photo (for me) of a wildebeest where you can actually see it’s eyes.

I’ve gotten these posts done ahead of time, as today I am heading back to Africa for another amazing adventure. I am so looking forward to being out in nature, being close to elephants, and frankly, being warm (the winter has dragged on and spring has been slow to start).

I thought I would share a few of my artistic impression images, the ones that I edit to look like paintings or that end up a bit over the top.

I was so fortunate to spend time with large herds of elephants both in Amboseli, and in the Masai Mara. This photo is from the Mara, where a large herd was passing through the conservancy. We spent about an hour surrounded by elephants as they went about their day.

A 7 shot stitched panorama of just a small portion of the elephant herd passing through Ol Kinyei Conservancy in Kenya.

It’s always nice to look at things from a different perspective. I have loads of beautiful colour photos from this sunrise photo stop, and wanted to see how it felt in black and white.
