    1. They are just so lovely 🙂 They have such soft and delicate faces… well except the males during rut, but that was a whole different post! Our very first safari and time out on game drive we were with a couple that was very, VERY focused on trying to see cats, which made for a bit of a tense afternoon when the cats were nowhere to be found. We were on our own the second afternoon, and our guide asked what would we like to try and find. I told her to find us some impala, and we’d be good. About 5 minutes into the drive, we passed by a herd, and the “pressure” to find them was off, and we could just enjoy whatever mother nature placed in our path. So now the family joke whenever we are asked what we would like to see we all chime in “Impala!”… and oftentimes get rather quizzical looks from the rangers and trackers.

      1. And I’m sure some very dirty looks from some of the other guests on the vehicle! Not being at the mercy of the whims of the guide or the guest with the loudest voice is one of the reasons why we so love the self-drive options (apart from the economics); you can take whichever road you like and spend as much time as you like with whatever you find.

        1. We’ve been very fortunate to only have a had a couple experiences with people pushing for a particular experience; gratefully most of the people I have encountered are of the same mind-set, that whatever we come across is great. I think if I get dirty looks for anything, it would be my enthusiasm at every bird we see (and every elephant). Most people seem to know the impala comment is just for laughs 🙂
I’ve not tried any self drive options yet; after the long haul from North America I’m quite content to let someone else take care of getting me from point a to b, though it certainly may be an option in the future.
